Döppelganger

Weird.

I got home after a dangerous ride home and found a message on my answering machine. The person said 'Hi this is a call for Matt K*****, I'm calling becuase the property insurance for (insert greek frat letters here) expires on October 6 and we should get to work on that before it expires."

Ohh-kayyy. I scratch my head for a moment but put it out of my mind.

Later than evening the phone rings.

"Hello"

"hi! Matt?"

"Yes."

"This is Scott _____"

"OK"

"Yeah, I'm calling about the property insurance for (greek letters)"

"the what?"

"The property insurance for (greek letters)"

"Uhh, what was that for" (at this point I am searching my brain for something relevant. I've been caught flatfooted before)

"The fraternity, (greek letters)"

"errr"

"Aren't you in (greek letters)"

"no. I've never been in a Fraternity."

"This is Matt K_____. right"

"Yes, but its pronounced K_____"

"Uh, and you live on Green St.?"

"Yes, but I've never been in a fraternity."

"That's odd...Green street in Manyunk, right"

"No, that's Green Lane, I'm on Green St. in Fairmount."

"Oh weird, theres another Matt K______?"

"There aren't too many of us."

"Oh man..."

It went on from there. But the gist of it is: There is another MK in town.

Not the best of weeks.

Well, The vet decided that SaraBelle would try a new medication to help her keep food down. The stuff is verrrry expensive, but that's the way it goes. It is also rather hard to find, as most Pharmacies do not carry it. The result is that although I put in the prescription on Thursday, I will not have the stuff until Monday. *sigh* Meanwhile, SaraBelle tries to eat, but she cannot keep the food down. She even threw up in my sneakers. Just what I needed.

Meanwhile, I am being fined for replacing my windshield. I didn't have the velcro to hand up my EX pass, but I had the impression the reader was strong enough to work from the dashboard. Not true. I called the EX pass hotline and they said they'd send velcro, but they did not do so. Meanwhile, my tag was not being read and EX Pass sent a bunch of 'Legal Notices' with $25 added to each $3 fee. There are at least eight of them. I now get through the gate by holding up the tag, but I am not thrilled with having only one hand to steer, especially since my car is a manual transmission.

Meanwhile, work is stressful. We have a new catalog dropping an there were more than a few mistakes in it. This might kill us, given that the product is supposed to be our new bread and butter.

Add to this I have been getting headaches all week. I don't know if it is stress, or sinsus, or allergies, or lack of sleep but its been happening. Didn't get them today, but I can kind of 'feel' them on the outskirts of my skull.

Also, my Aquarium seems to be having some kind of problem. A lot of the smaller fish died off and there seems to be some mold growing on the bottom. I dropped in lots of meds after a trip to monster pets, but I am only hoping this will clean the tank up from whatever ails it.

More on SaraBelle

Well, she didn't manage to keep food down this week. But at least she was eating. Problem, was she would then throw it up a few hours later. The vet doesn't know if it is an effect of the chemo or the tumor. So SaraBelle is getting a new prescription for some very expensive stomach settler. If this does not work then the next step is to take her off chemo for a couple of weeks to see if she can regain some weight. She's coming up on her 1 year anniversary of the discovery of the tumor and the vet says she is surprised she has come as far as she has. So we are at the stage where radical methods must be employed. *sigh*

Another downturn.

SaraBelle has not been very chipper this week, and she remained either hidden most of the time or was sleeping. When I did try to give her treats, she refused them. She didn't act very enthusiastic overall, and actually looked like trying to eat treats was hard for her (bending over seemed to trouble her). She went to the vet today and they confirmed that she was now under 4.5 lbs. The vet also called to tell me her mass seemed larger. To battle this she was given a dose of two types of chemo treatment. If that has no effect then we will drop chemo for a while to see if she gains some weight.

She's bounced back from these crises before, but always with some loss in the weight column. There's not much weight left to lose.

The Semi-Annual Longride...The long road home.

So this being Labor Day weekend means that it is time for my semi-annual long bike ride. Wherein I try to ride for at least 40-50 miles. My second post in this blog was of how the members of a Philly Bike Club ride group ruined the last one, and around may you can read of the journey to Valley Forge that was surprising draining.

In any case, I decided this time I would take a certain Route 537 in New Jersey. I'd go over the BFBridge as if I were going to work, but then turn up Market street and head NorthEast instead of SouthEast. I planned not to push it, having no real lay of the road and how suitable it would be for biking.

I got through Camden with minimal trouble. It wasn't the nicest of roads, but it was workable and there wasn't too much traffic to deal with. Once I got into the townships things improved a lot, and riding was nice and easy. There were fair number of riders on the road as well, including one who I chatted with for a while on the move. He seemed very impressed that I had started from Philly. He mentioned the road went on for a few more miles with one slightly dicey spot, which turned out to be little trouble.

In fact the only trouble was some freakiness with the roads and the map. A T-intersection was where it shouldn't have been, but that was dealable. Overall the road was so easy I just kept going.

Until I realized that I was at the juncture of 537 and Route 68. Which is just a bit North of Fort Dix. This map should give you an idea of just how far I had biked. I realized that I was starting to feel some fatigue and decided to head home. I figured I would save some time and effort by taking PATCO back.

This would prove to be a mistake.

On the way back I stopped at Subway at the intersection of 537 and 206 and had some lunch. I had a decent breakfast that morning and that likely was one reason I did have too much trouble traveling. The other was the wind was at my back, and was now pushing into me.

Deciding to get to the train station proved to be an error. First problem was that the station was about as far from where I was as Philly was. The second problem was that the path was not direct by any means, and the map was being less than helpful. Roads were misnamed, or didn't list certain intersections, or had a funny idea of what made a road 'bikeable'. I had to stop and check the map at every intersection. Thankfully there weren't too many. But at some point I got off the track I had planned, and ended up riding down route 73 to get to where I was going. Not really a great thing.

After much long travel, I arrived at the train station. Not long afterwards, the train went into town. I got home around 5:30 or so, having been riding since 11:30 that morning. Most of that time was spent getting to the train station.

Some observations about the trip:

1) Yes Virginia, there still is farmland in New Jersey. And lots of county signs pointing out that they have preserved it.

2) The most depressing things to see is a McMansion undergoing construction. A finished one is bad enough, but when these things are half-completed, with dug up dirt (now mud thanks to the remenants of Hurricane Ernesto) and debris all around it, it just looks like decay already happening. Add some grass and you've got a vacant lot in Philly with some timber stuck in it.

3) I can apparently make my bike tires squeal like a car. When my tool bottle fell off the bike when I hit a pothole I had to stop fast and it was quite a sound. My bike smelled like burnt rubber.

4) When the short sleeves on your new bike jeresy are slightly shorter than the sleeves on your older jerseys you can end up with Neapolitan arms!: Pale skin, red skin, tan skin!

All told I think I rode about 70-80 miles yesterday. Not bad, really. Not bad at all.
I wish I had a more accurate figure, but I stopped using bike computers some time ago.

The TelesccopeMerc 1 year (-1 day) blogging anniversery

Yay. By tomorrow, this blog will have been in existance for one year. Hard to beleive, but there it is.
